I downloaded the software about a month ago and almost immediately began
converting my existing AVI files into SWF,
which was no small feat for me. While I used to be a pretty tech savvy gal –
this new media does get the best of me at times.

I have downloaded both versions of the Cam Studio software and the PRO interface
is really the way to go – the added on features make it well worth the “chump”
change that it costs. At the time of this writing – it’s like $30. Compare that
to $300 for Camtasia. Perhaps I just don’t need massive bells and whistles
though. I just want to be able to record from my microphone and capture a screen
to make a training video. And it works.

It was so easy to use that we are actually creating a library of help files for
our own personal business, so we don’t have to “repeat” the trainings for our
systems over and over again. FINALLY a tool that is helpful.

Cam Studio Pro is broken into 3 parts, the Recorder, the Player and the Producer
AND it also offers a web page designer so practically all you have to do is
record and GO. AND the best feature so far is that you can embed a link into the
SWF file so that when it reaches the end of the movie, it can redirect right to
the webpage of your choice.

OK… so the recorder, how does that work? Well you just pick what you want to
record, decide whether or not you need audio, and select the CamStudio Decoder –
and hit the RECORD button – it really is that easy.

The Player is just that – it plays AVI files for you – no need to load up
Windows Media Player

Last the Producer is the Bee’s Knees – that is how you easily convert AVI to
SWF. If you didn’t need any of the screen capture capabilities – for me this
part alone was worth well over $100.00 — I have made flash files from my AVI –
so I can share pictures of my boys easily over the web with the rest of our
family.

The one drawback is that it doesn’t have a video editor with it – there are
some ways to use screen annotations – but I have left conquering that for
another day. So if I want to use some of the bells and whistles of Windows
Movie Maker – I can’t get a small AVI file back out… so no "edited" files. I
am sure there is a solution out there for that – but for now – I don’t know what
it is.

So I said that feature was worth $100… but the whole dang package is $30 –
The website says the price is going up soon, so I can’t guarantee the price
later on. I checked the site at the writing of this posting – and it is still
$30.

PROS:

• Good How To Videos – Dave gives you the lowdown in easy to understand

• You can redirect at the end of the video to any URL you choose (great
  for demos and more)

CONS:

• Can’t edit video directly in the program
• Because it’s so simple to use – it may not have enough bells and whistle
  for the super techy
• Not Free… but the Free Version of CamStudio doesn’t come with all the
  add on tutorials

I stuck to using tables for my layout and for years now I have made beautiful internet pages with those very html tables with no problems… be it in terms of Search engine marketing, or display.

Despite all that, everybody is pushing me to make use of CSS as well as div and lists… bah! I have tried to do easy design with those things and I can inform you, it’s a domain on its own! You might get it correct and smile proudly at your handiwork….until you open the same work in a different browser and the whole thing appears a hodge-podge mish-mash of lines and boxes and misplaced text and images!

You see, just about every month, someone out there gets the bright idea to launch a new internet browser, and while he is doing that, Microsoft, Firefox, Apple Google along with every other big player also decides to add ‘new features’ to their previously offered browsers….It’s all part of this so called “browser wars”…… never ending upgrades.

Anyway, as there are so many browsers on the market, and each one makes use of its own standards, designing a web page to appear the same in all of them is impossible….ESPECIALLY if you use CSS and divs.

My solution? Employ the good old trusted tables. You can’t go wrong with that chunky chum. Setting up a design is a five minute piece of work. Centering it is a matter of editing one tag… and the rest is history. With Divs and CSS….it is a serious mission, analogous to the ‘Mission to Mars’! You just can not be definite what you put together in CSS/Divs will work because you will never be able to test for all browsers.

As a result, web standard compliant or not, I for one will stick to a tried and tested formula… tables. Am I the only one who feels like this? Who knows, but I know what works for me!
